Lankershim Blvd Green Street

Project Location

The Lankershim Blvd Green Street Project (Project) is located in Council District 2, in a highly urbanized North Hollywood neighborhood. The project area is in a commercial corridor and bordered by Chandler Blvd to the south and Victory Blvd to the north.

Project Description

The Project captures stormwater and urban runoff from a 67-acre watershed and infiltrates the captured water into underground aquifers. During a normal rainy season, the project has the potential to capture more than 23 million gallons of water annually. The Project takes a distributed approach and installs green stormwater infrastructure at various locations along Lankershim Blvd. A bioswale and dry well system capture and infiltrate rainwater and urban runoff. The planting of trees greens and cools the surrounding neighborhood.

Project benefits:
  • Increases groundwater recharge in the San Fernando Groundwater Basin
  • Improves water quality for the Los Angeles River by removing pollutants such as trash, bacteria, metals, and nutrients
  • Alleviates localized flooding
  • Enhances neighborhood aesthetics
  • Improves pedestrian access and safety near schools

Project Cost and Partners

The Project cost was $3.78 million with funding provided by LA Sanitation and Environment, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and the California State Coastal Conservancy.
